During the latter part of his reign, Maxentius became embroiled in a civil war. He formed an alliance with Maximinus II to stand against Licinius and Constantine. However, Maxentius faced defeat at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312. During the battle, with his army in retreat, it is said that Maxentius tragically perished by drowning in the Tiber River.
